    A paper is accepted to CIKM 2018, a top tier data mining conference. The paper "Zoom-SVD: Fast and Memory Efficient Method for Extracting Key Patterns in an Arbitrary Time Range" proposed an algorithm which extracts key patterns of multiple time series data in an arbitrary time range.

    B.S. student Sejoon Oh won the HumanTech award (gold, 1st in Computer Science) from Samsung, from his paper "Scalable Tucker Factorization for Sparse Tensors - Algorithms and Discoveries". M.S/Ph.D. student Jun-gi Jang also won the Humantech award (honorable mention, 4th in Computer Science), from his paper "Fast and Memory-Efficient Method for Time Ranged Singular Value Decomposition". HumanTech award is given to best papers in the engineering area, and it is the most prestigious award among such kind in Korea. Congratulations!

    2 papers are accepted to ICDE 2018, a top tier database conference. The paper "TPA: Fast, Scalable, and Accurate Method for Approximate Random Walk with Restart on Billion Scale Graphs" proposed an algorithm which computes RWR scores approximately exploiting PageRank and block-wise structure of real-world graphs. The paper "Scalable Tucker Factorization for Sparse Tensors - Algorithms and Discoveries" proposed a scalable Tucker factorization method for sparse tensors, which updates factor matrices in a row-wise manner.

The paper "SIDE: Representation Learning in Signed Directed Networks" proposed a network embedding algorithm for signed directed networks. The paper "Fast and Accurate Random Walk with Restart on Dynamic Graphs with Guarantees" proposed an algorithm computing Random Walk with Restart efficiently on dynamic graphs.

    The demo paper "PegasusN: A Scalable and Versatile Graph Mining System" is accepted to AAAI 2018, a top tier artificial intelligence conference. The paper proposed PegasusN that provides and seamlessly integrates scalable algorithms for various graph mining operations: graph structure analysis, subgraph enumeration, graph generation, and graph visualization.

Google Travel Award is given to a selected primary author of a paper in a top-tier conference in Computer Science. Jaemin will present his paper "Supervised Belief Propagation: Scalable Supervised Inference on Attributed Networks" in ICDM 2017. Congratulations!

    The paper "A Comparative Study of Matrix Factorization and Random Walk with Restart in Recommender Systems" is accepted to BigData 2017, a top tier data mining conference. The paper compares matrix factorization and random walk with restart in four recommendation scenarios providing intuition on the meaning of the results.

    The paper "Supervised Belief Propagation: Scalable Supervised Inference on Attributed Networks" is accepted to ICDM 2017, a top tier data mining conference. This paper proposed a supervised and scalable algorithm based on Loopy belief propagation to solve a node classification problem on edge-attributed networks.

B.S. student Jungwoo Lee also won the Humantech award (bronze, 3rd in Computer Science), from his paper "CTD: Compact Tensor Decomposition for Multi-way Data". HumanTech award is given to best papers in the engineering area, and it is the most prestigious award among such kind in Korea. Congratulations!

    The paper "Fast and Scalable Distributed Boolean Tensor Factorization" is accepted to ICDE 2017, a top tier database conference. The paper proposed a distributed algorithm that performs Boolean tensor factorization in a fast and scalable manner by utilizing caching and minimizing data shuffling.

    College of Engineering in Seoul National University selected the 'Seven Technologies to Lead the Future' on the 70th anniversary of foundation. Prof. U Kang introduced Amazon's recommendation system and delivery forecasting system to explain Big Data Technology, one of the seven selected technologies, and predicted the future of real-time big data analysis and forecasting technology.

  • [Dec 2016] Prof. Kang won the 1st Young Information Scientist Award from Korean Institute of Information Scientists and Engineers.

    Prof. Kang won the 1st Young Information Scientist Award from Korean Institute of Information Scientists and Engineers. The award is given to the best Korean Scientist under 40 in the area of Computer Science, and is given to only one person per year. Prof. Kang is the first recipeint of the award. Congratulations!

    Ph.D. student Ha-Myung Park won Google Travel Award for his ICDM 2016 conference trip to Barcelona, Spain. Google Travel Award is given to a selected primary author of a paper in a top-tier conference in Computer Science. Ha-Myung will present his paper "Partition Aware Connected Component Computation in Distributed Systems" in ICDM 2016. Congratulations!

    2 research track papers are accepted to ICDM 2016, a top tier data mining conference. The paper "Partition Aware Connected Component Computation in Distributed Systems" proposed an algorithm which computes connected components of large scale graphs using distributed systems. The other paper "Personalized Ranking in Signed Networks using Signed Random Walk with Restart" proposed a novel ranking model, signed random walk with restart, which provides personalized rankings in signed networks.

    Ph.D. student Jinhong Jung won the global Ph.D. fellowship from National Research Foundation of Korea. The global Ph.D. fellowship is a national service which National Research Foundation of Korea and Korea Ministry of Education support for developing world-class doctors. It selects Ph.D. students nationally and funds school and living expenses of the selected students during 3 years. Jinhong Jung will do a research on "Fast Ranking in Large-scale Graphs via Link Analysis" through the global Ph.D. fellowship. Congratulations!

    The research for multi-dimensional big data analysis system receives wide media coverage (YONHAP NEWS Agency). The system utilizes distributed machines to analyze 10 to 100 times larger data compared to existing systems. The research will be presented in ICDE 2015, a top tier database conference.

    The paper "HaTen2: Billion-scale Tensor Decompositions" is accepted to ICDE 2015, a top tier database conference. The paper is on scaling up two important tensor decomposition methods, Tucker and PARAFAC, on MapReduce.

    A research track paper and a demo paper are accepted to ICDM 2014, a top tier data mining conference. The research track paper "Distributed Methods for High-dimensional and Large-scale Tensor Factorization" proposed efficient distributed algorithms for large scale tensor factorization which can be used for recommendation. The demo track paper "Eventera: Real-time Event Recommendation System from Massive Heterogeneous Online Media" demonstrates a real-time event recommendation system.

  • [Feb 2014] Ha-Myung Park won the HumanTech Award.

    Ph.D. student Ha-Myung Park won the HumanTech award (bronze) from Samsung. His paper is titled "An Efficient MapReduce Algorithm for Triangulation in a Very Large Graph" and it proposed an efficient MapReduce algorithm for finding triangles in large graphs.

  • [Jan 2014] Yongsub Lim won the grant award from "Venture Research Program for Graduate and PhD Students".

    Ph.D. student Yongsub Lim won the grant award from the "Venture Research Program for Graduate and PhD Students" from KAIST, for his proposal on distributed real time graph stream mining. The grant is highly selective (10 students in KAIST this year), and aimed for providing active support for creative and influential ideas that entail high risk.

  • [Sep 2013] Inah Jeon won the 2013 Qualcomm Innovation Award.

    MS student Inah Jeon won the 2013 Qualcomm Innovation Award. The award is a fellowship given to high quality papers. Her paper is titled "GigaTensor: Scaling Tensor Analysis Up By 100 Times - Algorithms and Discoveries" and it focused on the tensor analysis for finding patterns and anomalies in billion-scale real-world tensor using Hadoop.

  • [Aug 2013] U Kang won the 2013 SIGKDD Doctoral Dissertation Award, Honorable Mention.

    Prof. U Kang won Honorable Mention for the 2013 KDD Dissertation Award, which is the highest honor for a data mining thesis. His dissertation is titled "Mining Tera-Scale Graphs: Theory, Engineering and Discoveries" and it focused on the award winning PEGASUS system for finding patterns and anomalies in billion-node graphs using thousands of machines. U received a certificate of recognition during the opening ceremonies at the upcoming KDD Conference in Chicago.
